Not to be outdone by the Sydney Opera House in Australia or the Walt Disney Concert Hall in the US, Germany also has Elbphilarmonie which is one of the most beautiful and biggest concert venues in the world and also acoustically sophisticated.
Located in the city of Hamburg on the banks of the river Elbe, this building resembles a sailboat, ocean waves, icebergs or crystals. The building which has a height of 108 meters turned out to be not only a concert hall but also a hotel and apartment. While the basic part previously functioned as a warehouse.
This building is a representation of a fusion between Hamburg in the Middle Ages and today’s Hamburg. Since it was first opened in November 2016 until June 2019, Elbphilarmonie which has around 1000 glass windows and a corrugated roof has attracted more than 10 million visitors to come see the building.
Unfortunately not only beautiful stories attached to this building. There is an unpleasant story in the process of building Elbphilarmonie. The building began construction on April 2, 2007. At that time the construction process was expected to be completed in 2010 with an estimated cost of € 241 million. But it’s only been a year, in November 2008 the initial contract for Elbphilarmonie’s construction was changed and the cost increased to € 450 million
Does not end there. In August 2012, rebuilding costs increased to € 500 million. And finally when the building was completed on 31 October 2016, € 789 million was spent or more than triple the initial proposal. Sadly the people who paid the fees were the people of Hamburg because the taxes they paid were channeled to the Elbphilarmonie development.
Elbphilarmonie has three concert halls. The largest room can accommodate 2100 spectators. Musicians appear in the middle of the room and are surrounded by the audience. The walls of the concert hall at Elbphilarmonie are designed in such a way as using 10,000 special slabs capable of spreading sound so that wherever the audience sits, they will listen to the same sound as well.
Do not stop there Elbphilarmonie’s luxury, there are 244 hotel rooms available in this building. While upstairs there are 45 luxury apartments. To hold a meeting there is a conference room, while for entertainment there are restaurants, bars, and spas.
But all concert venues around the world usually do not cost a lot, say only Loncoln Center in New York, the Palais Garnier in Paris, or the Sydney Opera House in Sydney. Plans for the construction of many of these buildings have missed both in terms of time and cost. But in the end, it all paid off when the buildings became tourist attractions.
