Izzy Stradlin started a day in 1987 with a fad. He called his band mates, Slash, Duff, and Steven. Announced that the song “Sweet Child O ‘Mine” which had just been recorded and was in the process of mixing, sounded very powerful. With enthusiasm erupted – something Izzy rarely does – he asked his three friends to come immediately to the studio. The three people, because they rarely saw Izzy so excited, finally arrived after 1pm.
“The first thing I saw was the face of traumatized sound engineer Mike Barbiero, who looked like a new prisoner had been interrogated overnight,” recalled Slash in his biography.
Mike plays the result of mixing. In the song “Sweet Child O ‘Mine”, only Izzy guitar sound and Axl vocals. “The sound of the drum is almost inaudible, the bass strings are absent, and the sound of my guitar is only heard in the intro and solo,” said the frizzy guitarist confused. Izzy turned out to call them not just to listen to the results of mixing. But to get three of his colleagues to repeat the recording “Sweet Child O ‘Mine”. From the beginning.
1987 was a tough but hopeful year for Guns N Roses. There is the death of a friend. Personnel come and go. Hopes are similar to Russian rulets. The concert was only watched by a few people. But last year they managed to release a mini album Live?! * @ Like a Suicide. This recording is printed 1,000 pieces in the form of vinyl and cassettes.
This album was in demand in England. The public sees hot rock bands that are not rousing in the era of rampant beautiful rock bands. Slash screams, “Hey fuckers! Suck on Guns N ‘Fuckin’ Roses!” in the opening album already reflects how uneasy they are. Good music, behavior, especially makeup.
So when GNR finally finished mixing Appetite – including at the last minute putting Adrianna Smith’s moan that was heard in the song “Rocket Queen” – the manager, Alan Niven, decided the band had to tour out of the cage. Chosen is The Marquee, the legendary club in London. This is a risky act considering that Marquee is a sacred place for rock music.
Almost all the big English bands have performed there. The Rolling Stones first performed at The Marquee. Starting from The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, until Iron Maiden has performed there. Whereas GNR is a band from their rival countries. Do not have a full album, only armed with a strong mentality that was tested from the hell tour to Seattle – we first save this story later.
Before leaving, these bengal band personnel must solve their respective problems. Slash, for example. This English-born guitarist has to take care of his missing green card. When taking care of it to immigration, he invited two of his friends, Todd Crew and West Arkeen.
“That was clearly an idiotic error,” Slash said.
From home to immigration, they are already drunk. At the immigration office, Todd was almost arrested for playing with rubber plants in the main hallway. But finally Slash managed to get the magic card.
In the UK, there are two separate apartments that are rented weekly for groups of Guns N Roses. The first group consisted of Axl, Izzy, and Alan. Whereas Duff, Steven, and Slash in another apartment. Their apartment is located on Kensington High Street which is not an entertainment area. In other words: the desert for alcoholic drinkers.
“It’s not rock n roll at all,” said the guitarist whose real name is Saul Hudson.
There was only one pub at the end of the road, and in a short time they had become like old customers. Todd and Del James followed them from Paris. Their daily activities are: gig, drunk, gig again. One time Slash and Duff wandered in Soho, London’s entertainment center. They get drunk when entering various pubs and bars, and come out even more drunk. Until finally they missed the last train to the apartment.
These two drunk people started looking for buses. Zero, because it’s almost dawn. So they looked for a taxi. It is an unwritten law that if you are a taxi driver, never carry two messy people who are very drunk. Just like the drama of love, it rains at a time like that. The difference is, Duff and Slash quarrel throughout the morning. Blaming each other for the bad luck of missing the train
“I don’t remember anything. Only remember when we woke up, we were already in the apartment. I also don’t know how we got to the apartment,” Slash said.
The first GNR gigs in the UK took place on June 19, 1987. Initially the concert was only planned once. But apparently the tickets were sold out. Then the second concert was held on June 22. Tickets for 4 pounds were sold quickly. Then the concert was added one more time, June 28. Duff remembers these three concerts in England with warm feelings. GNR fans know them and stop to take pictures together or ask for autographs.
“It feels strange and odd, even though the hysteria is only on a small scale,” said Duff in his biography, It’s So Easy and Other Lies.
In those three concerts they played many songs which later became hits in the future. Start “Shadow of Your Love” which was born in the Hollywood Rose era and has never been included in any full GNR album; “Out Ta Get Me”, “It’s So Easy”, the heroin song “Mr. Brownstone”, to “Welcome to the Jungle” which in the future will be named one of the best rock songs of all time by many music observers.
There are also cover songs, such as Rose Tattoo’s “Nice Boys” which have appeared on Live?! * @ Like a Suicide and will appear on the GNR Lies album (1988). In London too, GNR modified Bob Dylan’s “Knockin ‘On Heaven’s Door” and played it premiere at the June 19 concert. The song became thicker in rock, complete with a long solo Slash. This song was later included in the album Use Your Illusion II.
It has been 30 years since GNR’s first concert in the UK. On 17 June 2017, they returned to London. This time with a different formation. There is no Izzy and Steven. Slash and Duff rejoined the band who raised him, after having had a cold year of war with Axl.
There are many different things at the concert on the 17th yesterday. GNR comes with a big name, considered one of the best and most dangerous rock bands in the book rock n roll. They can no longer walk casually carelessly. Slash and Duff had stopped drinking alcohol for the past few years, and never again missed the train and argued while it was raining.
But the concert at Marquee 3 decades ago clearly carved an important trail for the band’s career. Experience known in the land of people, the holy land of rock n roll, playing in legendary clubs and received a standing ovation, managed to push them to the farthest limit of a band.
“The three concerts ended well, making us even more convinced that this is not a typical hair metal band from Los Angeles. We are seen as a different band. Our feelings have finally met its justification,” Slash said.
After the tour was over, they returned to Los Angeles and completed the final stages of making Appetite for Destruction. And, like the cliches many writers cite, the rest is history.
