Eminem’s appearance at Oscar 2020 was the first time after 18 years that the rapper was named on the Academy Awards stage.
The song that Eminem performed at Oscar 2020, Lose Yourself, was known to be supposed to be brought to the stage of the 2002 Academy Awards. At that time, the song managed to bring home the Oscar Best Best Song category for the film 8 Mile.
But Eminem was absent on the night 18 years ago. The cup was later received by his collaborator, Luis Resto. Now, the rapper whose real name is Marshall Mathers revealed to Variety the reason he wanted to appear at Oscar 2020 and the reason he did not appear on the night 18 years ago.
“I think because I didn’t have the chance to do that [carrying the song Lose Yourself] at the time, maybe this would be cool [carried in 2020],” Eminem told Variety.
“At that time, I never thought I had a chance to win, and we only brought Lose Yourself at the Grammy with the Roots a few weeks before the Oscars, so we didn’t see that [bringing again at the Academy Awards] as a good idea,” he continued.
“Also, at that time, I, who was young, did not feel that an award ceremony like Oscar would understand me,” Eminem said.
But he admitted his thoughts changed when his name was announced to receive an Oscar for the category that is often contested by many of these great musicians.
“But when I knew I won, ‘That’s crazy!’ That shows me how authentic and real that award is, when you don’t show up and you still win. It’s very real to me, ”
So surprised, Eminem even admitted that he could not describe with certainty whether he was disappointed or not that he did not come and receive the trophy itself.
Eminem admitted that at that time he did not think that musicians could get an Oscar for the song, and he claimed he was not ready to accept the fact that he was a musician with achievements at the Academy Awards.
Eminem also expressed his gratitude for being received on the Oscar 2020 stage with a tweet on his Twitter account containing a video of Lose Yourself at Oscar 2002.
On the other hand, the organizers of the Oscar admitted that previously they continued to look for musicians who would be a surprise after Justin Timberlake appeared to bring Can’t Stop the Feeling in 2017.
ABC Senior Vice President of Alternative Series, Specials and Late-Night Programming, Robert Mills said that they wanted a song that was known to people and was able to make the audience jump.
“We discussed with the Academy that Eminem, the fact that he had never performed the song [Lose Yourself] and it was like an anthem, and everyone knows and it won an Oscar. Wouldn’t it be good if he could invite him and perform the song?” Mills said to ET.
Mills later admitted that he kept the appearance of Eminem a secret so it would not be leaked to the public and the media.
“The element of surprise is very important to him that I think if it leaks, he will back off,” Mills said. “It’s great that it can be saved as a big surprise.”
